In the past, Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi used to be the place to be with concerts “raging” every weekend. However, this was in the 80’s and 90’s before there were many entertainment venues in Kampala so city revelers found a home on Portbell Road. Fast forward to the millennium and the place went quiet.

Now, a year under new management, Silver Springs Hotel is again busy – though not the hive of activity it was in the past. It has reinvented itself as a hotel alone, rather than an entertainment spot, so you are now welcomed by two not-so-menacing lions at the entrance.

These lions form part of the sculptures that can be found all over the hotel gardens. With 92 rooms, General Manager Samson Ombogo, says they are aiming at making it a 4-star hotel. Standard rooms are $100 USD, executive are $120 USD, and suites are $150 USD. These rates include bed and breakfast.

The rooms are air conditioned and include wireless internet and DSTV. All rooms are circular in shape and named after East African towns and cities meaning you can choose to stay in Nairobi, Nakuru, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Gulu or Mbarara. A number of conferences are usually taking place in some of the seven ‘Kampala Hill’ inspired halls which can seat up to 300 people

There are two bars, Pebbles and Pavilion where sodas cost 2,500 to 3,000 UGX and beers are around 4,000- 5,000 UGX. Pebbles bar has a resident DJ to entertain patrons.

Buffet is served daily for 25,000 UGX and there is and exotic a la carte, Continental, African and Asian and seafood menu. On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, guests can enjoy fish, chicken, pork and beef BBQ for 35,000 UGX a plate. “You can eat till you drop as long or even come back for more,” Ombogo boasts. He also feels that their Bella Casa Pizzeria offers the best pizza in town which costs 18,000-28,000 UGX. The hotel’s restaurant is open from 6.00am to midnight while the bars are open from 2.00pm to midnight.

The hotel plays host to wedding receptions in the gardens on the weekend and can host three weddings at ago. Although the hotel has a small swimming pool, there are future plans of constructing a bigger one as well as a casino, shopping mall and even bigger car parking lot. The swimming pool can be accessed by non-residents at 15,000 UGX per day.

The hotel is about a 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre if there is no serious traffic jam. You can access it by taxi at 1,000 UGX, or less by bus. From main Bugolobi, take Portbell road off the direction to Luzira. You will see a fountain like sign just a few metres on your right. For reservation call +256 758 508 421 or +256 (44) 505 976.
